The Use of Scaffolds for Teaching Higher-Level Cognitive Strategies

In the article, The Use of Scaffolds for Teaching Higher-Level Cognitive Strategies, Barak Rosenshine and Carla Meister present various research and examples of the effective use of scaffolding to achieve higher levels of  student thinking.  Scaffolds allow for students to feel supported while closing the learning gaps they may have.  High level thinking and questioning strategies strengthen a student's cognitive ability, confidence, and performance.  Students are held accountable for their learning and can connect learning to their own lives if scaffolding and questioning are done effectively.

With so much for students to gain, how do we as educators effectively scaffold and question our students so that they are successfully answering, thinking and learning at higher levels?

This article gives many examples from across the curriculum of how scaffolding can and should be a part of our daily classroom practice.

     Scaffolds can be used:

  • Presenting a New Cognitive Strategy
  • Regulating Difficulty During Guided Practice
  • Varying the Context for Practice
  • Providing Feedback
  • Increasing Student Responsibility
  • Providing Independent Practice

Please take time to post your 5 takeaways from the article, comment on my posts and one from a peer. (3 total posts).

Tweetchat #CISDEdChat

Utilizing tweet chat yesterday to share ideas and collaborate with the Castleberry ISD Administrative Teams was an exciting experience. I hadn't used tweet chat before and was intrigued at the possibilities and learning opportunities this utilization of technology could offer students, teachers, and stakeholders of CISD. I am currently planning on incorporating tweet chat into professional development for new and returning teachers and will also recommend ideas of utilizing tweet chat in the classroom. Check out the chat on Twitter at #CISDEdChat.

Good Luck Class of 2014

As the 2013-2014 year comes to an end, I am excited to see the class of 2014 embark on their life after high school journey.  This group of seniors were freshman when I started my journey as assistant principal at CHS.  Over the past four years, I have seen them grow, learn, and mature ready to exit high school as life long learners.  Together we have experienced change in leadership, integration of technology, and daily peaks and valleys. Congratulations to the Class of 2014 for your accomplishments!!!  Good Luck Lions and remember, We Are Achieving Excellence Together!!!!!
